July 1807, Court Records, Roane County, TN., Minute Book, 1807-09, p 178-9. James, Nancy, Matilda and Joel Hembree bring suit against Drury Smith and Elizabeth Smith for words of damage to their reputation.

Roane County, Tennesse, Minute Book C, p 276,277, March 21, 1809, "James Hembree and wife vs Drury Smith and Elizabeth Smith. Joel Hembree and daughter vs Drury Smith. Suits instituted 28 July 1807, on charges of Trespass for defaming words spoken to his damage $1,000. Both Hembrees dismissed Suit 21 March 1809.

1810 Federal Census, Spartanburg County, South Carolina, James Hembree was not listed. Family had moved to Warren County, Tennessee after 1804. The 1810 Federal Census for Eastern Tennessee are not extant.

Tennessee State Land Grant, #2941, For the sum of 12 1/2 cents per acre, paid into the office of the entry-taker of Warren County, and entered on the 5th day of April 1824, . . there is granted 20 acres by survey bearing date the 26th day of February 1825, on the north side of Rocky River and bounded as follows... Beginning at a white oak near the river running north with said Hembree's line 60 poles to a hickory and popular on the bluff of Rocky River thence with said bluff. . . to the said James Hembree and his heirs forever. . . . registered 24 day of November 1825.

Deed, Warren County, Tennessee, McMinnville, Tn., Register's Office Grant Book numbers 1-2426, April 1824- Nov. 1827,p 67, G.S. film 571590. James Hembree enters 240 acres of land on the waters of Rocky River including his farm and all his patent land., 20 March 1837.

1850 Federal Census, Washington County, Arkansas. James was listed living next door to several of his children. His son Isaac Newton served as executor of James's estate.

Copy of Records of Mourning Hembree's family from Lenore Primrose. Material taken from the Bible of Thomas Clark, father of Daniel Clark. The Bible gives the names and births of each of James Children. Gives place of James Hembree's death as Cincinnatti, Washington County, Arkansas.

History of Dade County, Missouri, James and his family are listed among the early settlers of Dade County. The first settlements in the territory, were made in the latter part of 1833. James and Nancy, moved their family from Spartanburg, S.C., after 1804. They settled in Warren County, TN, where the last eight children were born. Between 1830-2, the family moved to Missouri, settling in Polk County, now Dade County. They lived there but a short time. James settled near Crisp Prairie, on the site of Melville, now Dadeville. James, his wife Nancy, and their daughter Matilda were members of the Dadeville Christian Church, founded in 1838. They later moved to Arkansas, settling in Washington County. Several of James and Nancy's children went to Oregon with the Applegate migration. Their daughter, Matilda, born 1811, married Rev. Lindley in 1840. She died in 1841.

Ancestral File, Ver 4.11, 16 Aug 1993. Gives burial place of James as McMinnville, Yamhill, Oregon, Masonic Cemetery. This is incorrect. James died in Arkansas.
