PATRIOT SOLDIER OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

This memorial for Revolutionary War patriot soldier James Hill is dedicated to his 3rd-great granddaughter, the late Margaret Denton Ashton (1918-2007), Maury County native and postmaster of Culleoka, TN for 35 years. Margaret is credited with helping me find James Hill's long-lost headstone, and for personally handling the request for and installation of his military headstone, and his confirmation as a RW soldier by the DAR.

The following biographical sketch is from: “Let the Drums Roll - - Veterans and Patriots of the Revolutionary War Who Settled in Maury County, Tennessee” by Marise Parrish Lightfoot

James Hill, who was born about 1761, was probably living in North Carolina at the time of the American Revolution. His sister, Martha Hill, married John McFall in Rowan County in 1783/ One of Hill’s children was born in 1780 in North Carolina. There were five James Hills listed in the published records of Revolutionary soldiers in North Carolina. One of these records was a pay voucher in the Salisbury District Militia. This record may have been for the James Hill in this sketch, since Rowan County was in Salisbury District, and James Hill had some connection with Rowan County.

By 1796 he was living in the state of Georgia and remained there until 1807 or later. By September 1809 he was living in Maury County,
Tennessee, when he and David McCord were among the men ordered to clear and keep in repair the road from the Bedford County line to Love’s Mill in Maury County. John McFall, Hill’s brother-in-law, was appointed surveyor of the road. In 1812 James Hill, Robert McCord and David McCord purchased 1,049 ½ acres of land in Maury County on Silver Creek. The year before Hill had paid only a white poll tax. In 1812 he paid taxes on 275 acres of land. He was listed in Maury County in the 1820 and 1830 census records.

He died in Maury County on June 12, 1831, after having executed his will on December 25, 1830. His widow, Jane Hill, died February 9 1835 (or 1838). Their children, as named in the will, were: Olivia, born 1799 in North Carolina, married Burwell Kannon in Maury County on January 28, 1830; Matilda; Alexander; Middleton H. , born about 1796 in Georgia; Thomas; William H., born September 9, 1802 and died March 10, 1834; Jane, born 1805 in Georgia, whose marriage bond to marry Robert Caskey was issued in Maury County on July 2, 1823, died in 1858; and James B., born May 18, 1807 in Georgia and died September 7, 1892 in Maury County. James Hill, his wife, and some of their children are buried in the family graveyard on the property he had purchased in 1812.”
