James emigrated from Burnley,Lancashire to Auckland NZ with his parents Henry and Elizabeth Hirst and his siblings Samuel Luther and Mary Ann on the barque 'William Watson' ( 480 tons ).

Departed Gravesend (London) on 21 October 1858 and arrived at Auckland on 08 February 1859.

James was born on 18 December 1855 at Habergham Eaves,Burnley,Lancashire. A Member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers ( M.I.M.E. ) and the Institute of Electrical Engineers ( A.I.E.E. ), James was for several years the city electrican at Newcastle,NSW.Circa 1905,James was Head Engineer at the Mount Morgan mine in Queensland.

James died on 06 April 1930 aged 74 years ( NSW BDM - Death Reg No. 8046 Woollahra ). His obituary was published in the "Sydney Morning Herald" on 09 April 1930.
