About James Calfee Holmes

James Calfee Holmes was the son of William Holmes (1773-1830) and Mary "Polly" Calfee Holmes (1786-1825).

James Calfee Holmes married his 1st wife, Virginia Miller on July 25, 1833. Sadly, Virginia died on January 13, 1842 in Indiana, 6 months after the birth of their 4th child.

James Calfee Holmes married his 2nd wife, Margaret Brunner on February 15, 1843 in Indiana. Margaret was 18 years old at their marriage and together, they had 7 more children. In 1859, the family migrated to Kansas.

Two days after Christmas in 1859, James Calfee Holmes entered the S.W. 1/4th quarter of Section 21, Township 22, Linn County, Kansas. His son Joshua Wallace Holmes obtained the 160 acres immediately to the West. Joshua Wallace Holmes enlisted on October 16, 1861 in Co. H, 7th Reg. R.V.C. and in less than 1 month, was killed in the Battle of the Little Blue.

James Calfee Holmes is buried in the Calfee Cemetery, Pleasanton, Linn County, Kansas.
