26 Jan 1903: James Hummel died on Thursday afternoon of general debility at his home in Bismarck. He was 81 years old and had been ailing for some time. Mr. Hummel was widely known. He was a staunch Republican and was elected to the office of county commissioner, county auditor, collector of state and county taxes and tax collector in Cornwall Township. For 62 years he lived in the toll house of the Horse Shoe turnpike company at Bismarck. He was of a genial disposition and had a wide circle of friends. Mrs. Hummel died 39 years ago and Mr. Hummel is survived by the following children: James M. Hummel and Mrs. Joseph Goshert, Bismarck; Mrs. O. B. Siegrist, Mrs. F. P. Gettle, Mrs. Reuben Fields and Mrs. John G. Walmer, all of this city. Mr. Hummel was a member of the Reformed Church, at Bismarck. [Lebanon Semi-Weekly News]
26 Jan 1903: At 2 o'clock this afternoon funeral services were held over the remains of James Hummel, of Bismarck, at the late home of deceased at that place and were in charge of Rev. Bachman, pastor of Schaefferstown Reformed Church, and interment was made at Bismarck. P. H. Thompson was the undertaker. The funeral was one of the largest held in this locality in many years and the large attendance of relatives and friends at the funeral attested the high, esteem by which deceased was held by all who knew him.
