About Sir James Johnstoun of Westraw

James Johnstone of Westeraw in Petinane. Murdered by Claude & John Hamilton, sons of the 2nd Earl of Arran.(2)

James Johnstone of Westerhall , fl 1541-1571, the son of Herbert Johnstone. In 1560 he acted as arbiter for his brother, John Johnstone of that ilk, fl 1541-1550, and was knighted in 1571. He and his brother, John Johnston of that ilk, owned land in Dumfriesshire. James was also the heir of David Johnnestoun in Lochwod, Harthope, Crawford Dowglas, Lanark, 1570. He married Flora Somerville of Cambusnethan and they had a son, James Johnstone of Westerhall, fl 1575-1633, who succeeded in minority when his father, James, was killed (in January 1571) by members of the Hamilton family. His widow and supporters granted letters of remission to the perpetrators. (1)

"Matthew de Johnstone, the second son of Sir John above-mentioned, was designed Johnstone de Westerhall, or Westraw, by charter from the crown, and to him succeeded John, his son, in 1491, who was father of Herbert, who was succeeded by James, his grandson, in 1555: to him succeeded James, his son, in 1580.
