NOTE attached as a source is his death certificate giving his birth date as July 5 1840 - tho census records from 1850-1910 all are abstracted and listed below they mostly give a birth date of about 1843 - as about 1842 and find a grave lists birth date as 9 Jul 1842 Found were 2 obituaries but they do not list dates of birth and death.

James K. Deckard was the father of thirteen children, but lost three of them due to infant mortality.

See the profiles of the Almira Hayse and Savannah Hays children for a discussion of why one of them has the last name Hayse while the other one has the last name Hays.

One of the census documents mistakenly refers to James Deckard as "James Deckerd". Given the names of the members of his household, the census document is clearly about him, but there is overwhelming evidence that he spelled his name "Deckard".

There is a staggering amount of information about this man on the net, and all of the sources agree with each other on everything except one item: what was his middle name? See the geni.com record for his daughter Almira for an extended discussion of THAT issue, since her Find-A-Grave memorial and his are what is generating a lot of the confusion. We have used the spelling on his GRAVESTONE, but have included "James Madison Deckard" as an "also known as" name. He wasn't known by that name while he was alive, but anyone looking for "James Madison Deckard" probably wants this profile.

Update: We found the REAL James Madison Deckard. The Find-A-Grave researcher who identified him as the father of Almira Hayse (Deckard) is confusing Almira's father (viz., James K. Deckard) with a brother of hers who died when he was one year old.

On a lighter note, one census record calls a certain son of his "Porter" while another census record calls him "Isaac Porter". Porter's grave calls him "Porter I.". We called him "Porter Isaac".

Also, one source suggests that James K. Deckard had TWO siblings named Felta and Valentine, rather than one sibling named Felta Valentine. A few sources suggest that James K. Deckard had two siblings, one of which was Parthena (or some variant thereof), and another named Barthena. Find-A-Grave spells Parthena's name two additional ways within the same memorial (!!!). Unfortunately, that memorial doesn't show a picture of a tombstone.
