Bio: "James Keen and his brother George W. came to the upper Sandy area of Geary District of present day Roane County West Virginia from Pike County Kentucky some time shortly prior to 1849. The area was still known as Kanawha County, Va, when they settles in the region known as the "Three Forks of Sandy" - (now Newton, Roane County West Virginia).

Hardesty's History of West Virginia states that James and Nancy Keene were living in what is now Roane County when it was created. This reference also states that James Keen was a farmer and skilled mechanic. In the years he lived in that county he held various offices of public trust; four years supervisor, six years president of the board of education, four years justice of the peace, and secretary of the society of the Baptist Church for about 24 years."

They had eleven children: Elizabeth J., Feb 22, 1851; Nathan S., August 2, 1852; William C., August 30, 1854; Nancy C, June 4, 1857; Rebecca A., February 15, 1860; Philip J., February 20, 1862; Melissa F., June 23, 1864; James M., October 11, 1867,; George F., January 23, 1871; Sarah A., January 12, 1874 died the same day; John E., November 27,1874.

Elizabeth J. married John H. Tawney, April 20, 1866; The marriage of Nathan S took place on June 22, 1876 in Roane county to Blanche M. Upton; William C. married Electa Smith, December 8 1876; Nancy C. married Thomas S. Jarvis august 22, 1874; Rebecca A. married John B. Vineyard March 13, 1879; Philip J. married Elsie Jarvis on March 27, 1879 ;. David and Nancy (Bishop) Keen are the parents of James Keen. His father died in Terra Haute Indiana in 1830 and his mother, born in Russell county Virginia about 1708, died in 1876. The wife of James Keen was a daughter of William Keen who died on April 22,1855 and Mary Hamilton King who died about 1837. James Keen is a farmer and skilled mechanic. In the years he has lived in this county he has held various offices of the public trust: four years supervisor, six years president of the board of education; four years justice of the peace, and secretary of the Baptist Church for about twenty four years.
