About James Lucion Maddox, Sr.
James Lucion Maddox, Sr. had Spinal Meningitis as a child and was not expected to live. His father cared for him with determination. He did survive and was able to go to school, albeit starting at a later age than other children. He was in London 25 December 1926 when his son was born. Sometime after that the family moved to Inkster, Michigan where he took work with the Ford Motor Company. A year after his second child, Joanne June Maddox, was born, he was laid off with all the other employees. The ford Motor Company tried to help the former employees by providing large quantities of canned goods, sugar, flour, and coffee. In the Spring of 1932 James Lucion Sr. drove his family back to Mobile, Alabama where they moved in with "Big Daddy" and his second wife Jeannette [Jeannette M. Maddox] and James' brother Robert[Robert Gideon Maddox, Sr.] at 23 Houston Street, Mobile, Alabama. His father, Thomas Sumpter Maddox or "Big Daddy" was able to get him a job at the sawmill where Thomas was a foreman. Another grandson, Thomas Nicolas[Thomas Nicholas Maddox], son of Thomas Sumpter Jr. came for the summer vacation. He attended Talidiga school for the blind.
