James Mayhew Sr. and wife Frances were members of St. Barnabas Church and thought to be buried there, as is their son James Mayhew Jr.'s wife Jemima. James Mayhew Jr. and wife Jemima were members there at the time of her death and prior to his moving to Loudoun County, Virginia.

St. John's Church, King George's Parish (aka Piscataway Parish, St. John's Parish), 1763-1774: James Mayhew (Jr) and wife Jemima Mayhew are recorded in St. John's Register.

Earlier the Mayhews were members of St. John's Parish and had attended St. Paul's Church in St. Paul's Parish. St. John's was the mother church and still located at 9801 Livingston Road in Fort Washington, Maryland.

Bridges to the Mayhew Past, p.4: "In 1704, the parishioners of the St. Paul's Church petitioned the Maryland General Assembly that their parish was too large to be properly served by one rector. They further petitioned that the inhabitants of the upper part of Prince George's County should have the services of another clergy and that St. Paul's Parish shall be divided into two parts. In the same year the petition was granted and Queen Anne Parish was created from the northern portion of St. Paul's Parish. The first parish church of Queen Anne's Parish was a frame building which had been a Chapel of Ease in St. Paul's Parish for some time prior to 1704. Some of the records in the Register date back to 1686 and were probably transcriptions from the chapel records. The Chapel of Ease was replaced by a brick building begun in April 1708 and finished in 1776. It stands today, a large Colonial structure with an adjoining cemetery. The baptismal font which is still in use, was brought from St. Barnabas' Church in England in 1719. A silver communion service, which is used today, was made in England. Each piece is engraved ‘St. Barnabas' Church, Church of Merreland, 1719.'"

A number of family trees online have reported erroneously that Lionel Mayhew was the father of James Mayhew Sr. Information from Helen Handley, author of SOME DESCENDANTS OF JAMES MAYHEW OF PRINCE GEORGES COUNTY, MARYLAND, shows this lineage:

1. Raynold or Reynold Mayhew (or possibly a misreading of Reginald Mayhew)
Birth: ABT 1605 in Badingham, Suffolk, England
Married wife Margaret____
And had sons: John, Francis, and Reginald
2. John Mayhew Sr. born in Suffolk, England, Christening: 29 May 1630 Badingham, Suffolk, England
Married Elizabeth _____,
And had a son:
3. John Mayhew Jr., Christened 25 Sep 1660 Badingham, Suffolk, England, died in St. John’s Parish, Charles Co. (now Prince George's Co.), Maryland (Upper Chapel, St. John's Parish)
Came to Maryland in 1673 (Liber 17, folio 424), and in 1675/6, “age 16, on court records, bound for 5 years to Philip Lynes of Charles County on payment for his transportation from England (SERVANTS & MASTERS, Liber C-L, 1665-85, Charles Co., MD.)
Philip Lynes (Jr.?) b. 1649 d. 1709 m. Mrs. Ann (Dent) Clarke, widow of John Clarke. (aka Lyons)
1711: John Mahue wit. The will of William Jennings, Prince George Co., MD (Book 1, p. 55) (Pr. Georges was formed in 1695 from Charles Co. & Calvert Co.) William Jennings lived in St. John’s Parish. Probably the father of:
4. James Mayhew born c1690-1700, died in St. John’s Parish 1742, Pr. Georges Co, MD
married Frances (Piles or Harrison?) and married 2nd Izable. Will wit. by Francis Piles (Jr.) of Cuckold's Point plantation.
5. James MAYHEW Jr. b: circa 1724 d: BEF Feb 1794 married Jemima Lucas
DNA testing of descendants of James Mayhew Jr. show that they match the descendants of Francis Piles, proving that they are related. James Mayhew Jr. may have been a cousin of Francis Piles or a natural son of Francis Piles Jr. (called Francis IV in some pedigrees showing his great-grandfather as Sir Francis Pile, 1589-1635 of Berkshire, England). There were Mayhews and Piles in Berkshire for several generations prior to this.

Maryland Historical Magazine,
PUBLISHED UNDER THE AUTHORITY OF THE MARYLAND HISTORICAL SOCIETY, Volume IX (BALTIMORE 1914):
"MONTHLY MEETING
February 9th, 1914. The regular meeting for the month of February was held at 8.30 p. m., with President Warfield in the chair....
"A letter was read from Leroy S. Boyd, 604 Howard St., N. W., Washington, D. C, which related to Gustavus Hesselius's painting, "The Last Supper," which was said to have been painted for St. Barnabas' Church, Queen Anne's Parish, Prince George's County, Maryland, in 1721. The letter stated that a long time ago the painting had disappeared from the old church and for seventy-five years had been in the possession of the Muncaster family, Koekville, Montgomery County, Maryland, and that efforts had been made to secure its return to the church. Mr. Boyd suggested that the Maryland Historical
Society assist in the efforts to secure the return of the painting to the Church. Action on this communication was postponed."
