About James B McAlpin
James left Scotland as a child or teenager. Tradition says he was a participant in Ireland's Rebellion of 1798. He lived in either County Down or Tyrone.
Mrs. Sally Sage (unk.) found in a family album, "James McAlpine was from Cumber Village, County Down, Ireland
Sailed from Ireland on the Vessel "Jupiter" on 26 May 1811. Landed in New York 1 June (the departure date must be off). He settled in Pleasant Valley.
The log shows that James McAlpin, Jane McAlpin and Hugh McAlpin were on the ship.
It is assumed that Hugh was a son and he died circa age 10, before the birth of Hugh in 1821. There might be some question to this since a Hugh McAlpin is found in a later census who is approximately the right age. A male child is also enumerated in the 1820 census and 1830 census that is of the correct age.
"James McAlpin,29, Clinton, Dutchess County, NY, weaver, Oct. 1812, been in the U.S. for 1 year and 3 months with wife and 2 children."
James died during the 1849 cholera epidemic.
James McAlpin, immigrant ancestor of the McAlpin family, was born in Ireland, and came to the United States about the year 1811. The earlier generations of the family are found in Ireland, but in the seventeenth century the family crossed over to Scotland, remaining there for several generations and marrying into families in that country. But the father of James, turning towards the ancestral home of his family for so many generations, returned to Ireland and settled on the eastern coast. James spent the greater part of his young manhood in Ireland before coming to the United States, where he established himself in business in Dutchess county, New York. He married Jane Hunter in Ireland and had several children.
James McAlpin and Jane Hunter were married in Antrim, Ireland, on July 14, 1809. They arrived in America in 1811 with one child.
James McAlpin is in Dutchess County, New York, in U.S. federal census records in 1820, 1830, and 1840. I believe his children are: Rebecca (b. 1810), Ann Eliza (b. 1812), James (b. 1814), David (b. 1816), William (b. 1818), Hugh (b. 1821), Jane (b. 1823), and Catherine (b. 1826). Most of them were baptized in the Presbyterian Church in Pleasant Valley, Dutchess County, New York.
It's incredibly unlikely that his wife would have given birth to Harvey McAlpin in Scotland in 1822.
Alfred "Ed Moch" Cota believes that this man's given name was Henry and that he was born before 1800. His note is as follows:
Still under verification... Because of the Connection of "The McAlpin Family" with Show Business and The Arts, it is very possible that this Henry McApin, Might be the Same Henry McAlpin of The Tobacco Magnet of his day. It is possibe that Harvey McAlpin is related to Henry, as Harvey's Daughter, Edith McAlpin-Benrimo named Her Son, Joseph "Henry McAlpin" Benrimo after His Grandfather, Henry McAlpin.
There is currently no documentation for this theory, though that does not mean it cannot be true. If you would like to help research this unknown McAlpin man, please use the "Discussions" tab above.
