About James McClung
Research Notes
This James is frequently overlooked. He is undoubtedly the father of the three brothers James, Robert and John who fled Scotland due to persecution for their Protestant beliefs. They fled to Larne and later lived in the Coleraine area.
By a careful study of the records collected by Dr. William McClung and those who followed up his work I have concluded that of those three, the son James born in 1668 was the progenitor of most of the American McClungs. That’s not to say there were others but the most notable in terms of American history were four. Three were sons of James, who removed to Virginia in 1740 or so and their cousin John who is frequently conflated with James’ son John.

Tradition says that three McClungs, James, John and Robert, left Scotland on account of religious persecution and settled in Ulster, Ireland. That was in 1690. They were Presbyterians of the true blue-blood type.
