Cleburne Huston, in his book "Bold Legacy, the Story of the Houston/Huston Ancestors", cites Aimee Houston Eck's book "William Huston of Voluntown CT." In the book she states that William was the brother of John Houston, Gentleman, who arrived in Philadelphia in 1730 with his widowed mother, wife Margaret Cunningham, 4 sons and 2 daughters.
Married
Children
Margaret "Sarah" Houston (widowed- age 80) emigrated to America in 1735 with her two sons and their families. They lived for awhile in Pennsylvania. Margaret Houston and her son John McClung Houston; his wife Margaret Cunningham and children moved to Virgina.
(He had married Margaret Cunningham in Ireland 1717.)
Their children were all born in Ireland:
James (died 1740 in Ireland), Robert,, Isabella, Esther, Samuel, Matthew and John.
The family settled near the site of Old Providence Reformed Presbyterian Church, near the northeast line of the Borden Grant in Virgina. Here he built a stockade and within it or near it was the place for worship where the New Providence Presbyterian Church was organized in 1746 by Rev. John Blair, with him as one of its first elders, and John McClung and his son-in-law, John Montgomery, it's chief promoters. His mother died at the age of ninety seven; he died in 1754 b a limb from a burning tree.
John died at the age of 65 by a falling tree limb while clearing one of his fields. His will was probated May 15, 1755 Augusta County, VA. (Will book 2, p. 39)
The following is copied from a manuscript found among the papers of Rev. Samuel Houston, Rockbridge County, Virginia:
"John Houston came from Ireland with his family when my father Samuel was nine years of age, about seventeen hundred and thirty five (1735), bringing with him his mother, and wife, and all his children excepting the oldest son (James), who had received an education and was studying divinity, but died soon after the family left him of consumption.

After the death of Samuel Houston, John McClung Houston, his wife Margaret (nee Cunningham), his 80 year old mother, Margaret (McClung) Houston, and 6 of his 7 children sailed for America. They and the other emigrant passengers became suspicious that the Captain of their ship and the crew were planning to rob them and kill them, as they had sold all of their property in Ireland and had with them trunks of gold aboard. After discovering that many of the passengers knew how to sail and navigate the ship, they took over the ship and placed the Captain and crew in irons while they safely sailed the ship to Philadelphia. They settled 100 miles from Philadelphia in Lancaster, PA, and lived there for 17 years.
