WIlliam was the oldest son of John and Hannah Smith McFadden.
John and Hannah sons include: William, James, John Jr, Samuel, Elias, Andrew, Stephen, and Alexander.

James McFadin was the second child of his father,John 'Stephe'; McFadin. It is thought that he was born either inMassachusetts or perhaps even Pennsylvania about 1742, prior to hisfamily moving to Frederick County, Maryland. James was a Captain in theNorth Carolina Militia in Colonel William Graham's Regiment, andparticipated in the Cherokee Expedition in 1776 as well as in theRevolutionary War. By 1783 James along with his brothers Andrew,William, and John, were in Davidson County, North Carolina [laterTennessee]. Andrew, William and John migrated on to Warren County,Kentucky.
Captain James McFadin remained in Davidson County,as s shown in various documents in the Tennessee Archives 1783-1792, pp.4-486. He died in Davidson County, Tennessee in 1790. His son Jacob wasthe Executor of his will. Very little is known of most of the maleoffspring of James after 1810, and there is no record of the names of anydaughters that he might have had.
