About James McLain

Indiana Progress Nov 6, 1889 page 13
Another good man entered into his rest on Sabbath morning, November 3, 1889. Mr. McLain was born May 10, 1804, and at the time of his death was 85 years, 6 months and 23 days old.

The greater part of his life was spent on his farm near Indiana. He was married to Miss Margaret Hutchinson, daughter of David Hutchinson. This union was a very happy one. It can be truly said of both, they were of the excellent of earth, of high Christian character and attainments. There are five children surviving: Bell, John, James, Sarah, (now Mrs. Goodell) and Thomas. After the death of Mrs. McLain the care and responsibility of the home maker fell upon the oldest daughter. Miss Bell, and faithfully has she filled the position, doing all in her power to make a happy home for her father and brothers and sister.

Mr. McLain was one of Indiana county's old and best citizens. He had the confidence of all who knew him. He was a good, kindhearted man, who always had a word of comfort and encouragement for those in trouble, so much so that be was frequently spoken of as the poor man's friend. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, of which he had been ruling elder for about forty years, and during all his life he lived the religion he professed. Quite early in life he espoused tbe cause of temperance and was a faithful worker. Until his eyesight failed he was a constant reader of God's Word. One of his favorite portions was Psalm 71:14 18. He lived a good life in years and in deeds and the children, who have looked for the last time on the loved form of their earthly father, have the blessed assurance that he is now with his Heavenly Father and shall live again in perfect manhood and be forever with the Lord.
