About Charles Campbell McLain

Aged 78 years
Son of James McLain, (and Barbara Campbell) the first Prothonotary of this county. In early life deceased learned the blacksmithing trade, which vocation he followed for many years. He was a good workman and accumulated considerable wealth at the business. After many hears of hard toil at this business he relinquished it and opened a hardware store in which business he continued till his health failed. He was a man of strong convictions and was always willing to assist those who manifested a disposition to help themselves. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and when in good health his pew was never vacant. During the last years of his life he was severely afflicted and required constant attention on the part of the members of his family and other relatives. He leaves a son and daughter to mourn his loss.

The death of this old citizen occurred on Sabbath last after an illness of several years duration. Mr. McClain was at one time one of the most active and intelligent business men of this place, and by means of enterprise and economy acquired a handsome competence. He was married three times, first to Penelope Adams, a daughter of the late Gawin Adams, second to a cousin named McClain, from Franklin county, and third to Mary Reynolds, formerly of Bedford, Pa., who died some ten years ago. He leaves two children, Adams McClain, of White twp., and Miss Jennie, who lived with him and tenderly cared for him in his prolonged illness. The deceased was aged 77 years,7 months and 15 days. The remains were interred in Oakland cemetery on Wednesday.
