from Burlingame, KS July 5, 1900 p.5: "Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Newton who reside on the J. K. Rogers farm west of town mourn the loss of their son, whose death is surrounded by a mystery. James Arthur Newton who would have been eight years old in August went after the cows Thursday night on horseback. A short time after he had left the horse returned to the stable without the rider. Immediately a search was made, and the little boy was found cold in death in a hole in Soldier Creek back of the barn. The bridle-bit was pulled out of the horses mouth indicating that the little boy made a desperate effort to hang on to the rein and get out of the water. It is supposed that the horse either stumbled and threw him off or in going under a tree was dragged off by the limbs. The remains were interred in the Burlingame Cemetery Friday at 4:00 P.M. Rev. Dr. McBride officiating."* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Aug 15 2021, 17:42:45 UTC
