The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona, January 30, 2007 -- James Mervin Owens, 79, died January 26, 2007 in Mesa. He was born and raised in Show Low and served in the United States Army prior to the end of World War II and later served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon graduating from Brigham Young University he taught high school for 28 years in Nevada. He loved to teach and particularly enjoyed teaching adults who had returned to obtain their diplomas in evening classes. He also enjoyed gardening, horticulture and being with family. He is survived by Bonna, his wife of 55 years; three children, Jim Owens (Susan) of Las Vegas, Nevada, Dale Owens (Kyle) of Mesa and Elaunna Casad (Bryce) of Kearnes, Utah; and 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, Moylen, Duane and Seth; sisters, Lapriel Gillespie and Renae Theabold. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, February 2, with viewing starting at 8:30 a.m. in Mesa at the LDS Chapel on Adobe and Val Vista. Internment will be held Feb. 3 at 11:30 a.m. in Clay Springs. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Silver Creek Mortuary of Taylor.
