James Wesley Proudfoot married Nevada (Findley) Proudfoot (16 Feb 1865 - 6 Jan 1891) on 27 Feb 1882 in Barbour County, West Virginia.

In the 1900 U.S. Census, James and Nevada's daughter, Dema Proudfoot (born Aug 1886), was living with her paternal grandfather, Joshua Proudfoot, in Barbour County. _____

There is a record that Joshua Proudfoot married Huldah (McVey) Proudfoot (born c.1838) on 17 Oct 1855 in Barbour County, West Virginia. Joshua was born in Harrison County, Virginia, to Alexander and Elizabeth Proudfoot. Hulda was also born in Harrison County, Virginia, but their marriage record does not give the names of her parents.

Joshua was the son of Alexander Proudfoot (1791-1869) and Elizabeth (Cole) Proudfoot (1799-1863), who married on 23 Mar 1818 in Harrison County, Virginia.

Elizabeth (Cole) Proudfoot was the daughter of William Cole (1744-1847) and Anna Cole. She is mentioned in her father's will written on 11 May 1847 as Elizabeth, wife of Alexander Proudfoot. Elizabeth died of consumption. _____

In the 1860 U.S. Census, the widowed Joshua was living in Barbour County, West Virginia, with his son, Wesley, who was 3 years old.

Joshua [2nd] married Juanna Virginia (Talbott) Proudfoot (died 6 Apr 1883, at 39 years, 4 months, 16 days) on 11 Apr 1861 in Barbour County. She was the daughter of Robert R. Talbott.

In the 1870 and 1880 U.S. Censuses, Joshua and Juanna Virginia were living in Barbour County, and he was a "farmer." She was called 'Virginia' in 1870 and 'Juanna' in 1880. Joshua's son, James W. Proudfoot, was living with them in 1870 and 1880.

Joshua married Mary Margaret (Lewis) Proudfoot (Oct 1860 - 1924) on 31 Oct 1886 in Upshur County, West Virginia. She was born in Upshur County to Marcellus Lewis and Mary Jane (Johnson) Lewis. In the 1900 and 1910 U.S. Census, Joshua and Mary were living in the Valley District of Barbour County, and he was a "farmer."

Another record lists Joshua's death as taking place on 14 Feb 1916, at 82 years, 1 months, 8 days, of old age in the Valley [probably Valley District]. His death was reported by his son, F.H. Proudfoot. That is the death date engraved on Joshua's gravemarker; except it has 18 days instead of 8. Joshua was married at the time of his death. _____
