James immigrated to South Africa on the 'Arethusa' . They arrived at the Cape on 02 July 1822.

In 1820 Lord Charles SOMERSET was on leave in London; so was George THOM. He
was
asked to go to Scotland and recruit teachers and Calvinist ministers of
religion. This THOM did, recruiting as ministers Andrew MURRAY,
Alexander
SMITH and William THOMPSON, as well as three theological students, Henry
SUTHERLAND, Colin FRASER and George MORGAN, who came to South Africa in
1824, after they had completed their studies and been ordained.

The six teachers were James ROSE INNES, William ROBERTSON, Archibald
BROWN,
William DAWSON, James RATTRAY and Robert BLAIR.
