James Reid, here treated, is the son of Ninian Reid and Jonet Hamilton. He was born before 14 February 1595, the date upon which his baptism was registered at Prestonpans in East Lothian, Scotland. His baptismal record reads as follows: "Niniane reid and Jot Hamiltoun ane sone his name James Witnesss David Hamiltoun elder James Hamiltoun Thomas [ - ] and George Diksoun".
