About James Boone Salter

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/i/m/Regina-Simon/WEBSI...

James B. Salter (son of Samuel K. Salter and Susan Unknown) was born Bet. 1825 - 1827 in Pennysylvania, and died Jan 1874 in Anchorage, Kentucky (in the lunatic asylum)656. He married (1) Mary Ann Hoover on 14 Aug 1845 in Scioto County, Ohio657. He married (2) Joanna Debord on Bef. 1854, daughter of Jeptha Debord and Manah Middleton.

There is some confusion about James' name. He was also known as Jesse Boone and/or J. Boon Salter. In the 1860 census, James B. was listed in the Johnson County census and Boone Salter was listed in Lawrence County. Ages for the two men appear to be the same. Boon's wife is Jane, James' wife is Anna. Both could be variations of Joanna. Each has three children, Harve (or Harry), Thomas, and Susan. Their ages are identical. It's possible that the censuses were taken on different dates, and the family relocated or was otherwise double-counted. Finally, his grandson was named James Boon Salter, the son of James' son Harvey B. Salter.

Only James B. and family are listed in the 1870 census in Lawrence County.

In 1876, Thomas, his brother Harvey, and their mother Anna received bequests from the will of Judge William Salter in Portsmouth, Ohio. (A third child was mentioned, but none of the papers show the name of their third surviving Child, George.] The will states, in part: "I give and bequest to Ann Salter, widow of Jesse Boon Salter, son of Samuel K. Salter, dec., and to each of his three children, five hundred dollars - making for the four the sum of $2,000.00 dollars." In the next paragraph, he refers to "William Salter and Azariah Salter...sons of my brother Samuel K. Salter." The will and lists of the payments are on record in the Scioto County Courthouse in Portsmouth, Ohio, and I have placed copies in my personal file. In one of the entries, Anna is listed as Joanna Salter, her given name. I believe that these facts verify that Jesse/James Boon Salter was the son of Samuel K. Salter and nephew of Judge William Salter. The parents of Samuel K. and Judge William Salter were Samuel Salter and Bridget Shea. She was from County Cork, Ireland. The senior Samuel was a Revolutionary War veteran. (Recorded by Jean Salter Simon, March 13, 2002.)
