About Samuel K. Salter

Samuel K. Salter was the son of Samuel Salter and wife Bridget Shea. He as born December 31, 1779 in Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He married Susan (unk).

Samuel served in the War of 1812, as a private in Captain Thomas Collins' company. He was at Black Rock, New York, near Buffalo. These were the shipyards where Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's fleet was built. The British bombarded Black Rock October 13, 1812. American forces crossed into Canada and engaged the British on November 28, 1812 at Frenchman's Creek. Samuel was wounded at or near Black Rock, but it is unclear in which action it occurred. He was discharged for "inability," presumably due to his wounds. His brother William came to Black Rock to bring him home, at which time, according to family legend, William met Commodore Perry.

Samuel died January 31, 1844 in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio and was buried at Greenlawn Cemetery, Hill Section North, Portsmouth, Ohio.
