In December of 1818 he was granted 121 acres in Monongalia (noe present day Preston County) on Roaring Creek adjoining the lands of William Roberts and Thomas Butler's settlement at the Coal Lick Bottom on the Cheat River with the final patent granted 15 May 1822. "We can follow Jonathan's settlement in (West) Virginia through the U. S. Census records. The 1810 U. S. Census shows Jona. Spurgen living in Monongalia County, no township listed, age 26-45, 2 males under 10, 1 female 16-26, and 1 female under 10 (Also shown on the same census page are a Jas. , Jessee, and Jno. Spurgeon; perhaps father James, son Jessee, and uncle John?). This census shows us Jonathan and his first wife, Ruth Jeffreys and their children. ... Given that he was born in 1787 and had three children under 10 by 1810, we may assume he married Ruth Jeffreys ca. 1805/6 when he was 18/19 years of age.
... 1820 U. S. Census... 1830 U. S. Census... 1840 U. S. Census... 1850 U. S. Census... It appears that he moved several times. In actuality, he didn't move, the county border moved around him." Source: Spurgeon Family History, by Dr. Gary Alan Dickey, Canoga Park CA, 1993, p47
First settled in the city of Wheeling. ...son George settled in Ohio, William went on to either Kansas or where the city of Milwaukee is now located. He sold his land in Wisconsin and went back to Virginia. Later on, however, he brought his whole family by covered wagon toWisconsin and purchased 80 acres in Outagamie County.

Individual note: "The History of Doddridge County, WV" (1979), pp. 247-248, contains fairly detailed account of the Spurgeon family history. It says that 7 Spurgins came to America from England. One was James, who settled in the Preston County area in 1784, having relocated from Mill Creek, MD. He married Elizabeth Browning., an aunt to the celebrated Mechach Browning, the great hunter. They had two sons: Johnathan went to the Kanawha and Jesse married Catherine Spehr and is the ancestor of the Spurgeons in Grant County. (Preston was formed from Monongalia in 1818. Change of spelling to "Spurgeon" occurred about 1850.)
