James Squire (alternatively known as James Squires, 1754 – 16 May 1822), was a first fleet convict transported to Australia who went on to become Australia's first brewer.[1][2] James Squire is credited with the first successful cultivation of hops in Australia around the start of the 19th century, and is also considered to have founded Australia's first commercial brewery in 1798, though John Boston appears to have opened a brewery making a form of corn beer two years earlier.[3] Of note, this corn based beverage does not meet the definition of beer as it exists today. [4] His brew can still be purchased today.
