From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marquess_of_Bute
The Marquesses of Bute come from a family that descended from John Stewart (born 1360), Sheriff of Bute, a natural son of Robert II of Scotland and his mistress Moira Leitch, married to Janet Sympil and in 1407 to Elizabeth Graham. This John Stewart was granted the lands of Bute, Arran and Cumbrae by his father. He was known as the 'Black Stewart' because of his dark complexion; his brother John Stewart of Dundonald was known as the 'Red Stewart'. The grant of lands was confirmed in 1400 by a charter of Robert III.[1][2]

2b1: JOHN STEWART of Ascog, probably born around 1547. If Janet Cunniburgh were a late wife of William Stewart, this may explain the flurry of land transactions between 1541 and 1548. John Stewart is listed in the Stewart Clan Magazine as being of Kilcattan in 1568. He married MARION FAIRLIE, daughter of David Fairlie and Catherine Crawford. The date of this marriage has been estimated from 1552 to 1584, the later date being when he purchased Nether Ascog and conveniently 21 years before the marriage of his son John to Gilles Kelso. However, Gilles Kelso was a second wife and John (2b1a1) was from an earlier marriage (reasons given below). Thus the marriage between John and Marion Fairlie was probably in the late 1560s or 1570s.
