He held the office of Sheriff of Bute.1 He held the office of Commissioner of Buteshire in Scottish Parliament on 20 October 1579.1     John Stewart of Ardmaleish was the son of Sir James Stewart of Ardmaleish and Marion Fairlie.1 He died circa 10 October 1612.1

He married

  1. firstly, Mary Campbell, daughter of John Campbell of Skipnish, before 1590.1
  2. secondly, Fynegella of Finevole Nik Donald MacDonald, daughter of Sir James MacDonald of Duniveg, Islay and Glenns, circa 23 January 1590.1
  3. thirdly, Jean Blair, daughter of John Blair of that Ilk and Grizel Sempill, circa 15 September 1595.1
