

James Stewart is the bastard son of James V, King of Scots, and Christine Barclay. The Scots Peerage I: 24 The first reference to his existence is as "the kingis son with Cristiane Barclay." On 28 October 1533 he was included in the remainder of the lands of Douglas, and in 1536 he was included in the remainder for the lands of Tantallon. James Stewart died in or shortly after 1536. 28 October 1534: Charter issued under the Great Seal of Scotland by which James V, King of Scots, confirms that he has given the lands and barony of Douglas to his eldest bastard son James Stewart. The king also gave him the lands and barony of Dunsire, Craufurdmure and Bothwell, in the sheriffdom of Lanark; the lands and barony of Jedburgh Forrest in the sheriffdom of Roxburgh; the lands and barony of Bonkill in the sheriffdom of Berwick; the lands of Temptalloune in the Constabulary of Haddington and sheriffdom of Edinburgh; and the superiority of the lands and lordship of Keremure in the sheriffdom of Forfar. These lands and baronies were to be held by James Stewart and his lawful male heirs; who failing by his brother James Stewart, the king's bastard son by Margaret Erskine and his lawful male heirs; whom failing by his brother James Stewart, the king's bastard son by Cristina Barclay, and his lawful male heirs; whom failing by his brother Robert Stewart, another of the king's bastard sons. 31 August 1536: Charter issued under the Great Seal of Scotland by which James V, King of Scots, confirms that James Stewart, his bastard son by Elizabeth Schaw, has given the lands of Temptalloun, in the Constabulary of Haddington and sheriffdom of Edinburgh, and the lands and barony of Bonkill and Prestoun, in the sheriffdom of Berwick, to James Stewart, the king's bastard son by Margaret Erskine. These lands, which the king incorporated as the free barony of Temptalloun, were to be held by the younger James Stewart and his lawful male heirs; whom failing by his brother Robert Stewart, the king's bastard son by Eufam Elphinstoun, and his lawful male heirs; whom failing by his brother James Stewart, the king's bastard son by Cristinam Barclay, and his lawful male heirs.
