Born: December 14, 1731 in Penny Hill, Pitt County, North Carolina, USA Married: Ann Savage November 12, 1751 in Pitt County, North Carolina Death: 1780 in Green County, North Carolina, USA Notes: Occupation: Lawyer, Planter. Died on a British prison Prison Ship in Charleston Harbor 1780. He was in the battles of Briar Creek and Stono. Before the fall of Charleston, in a Skirmish with the Tories, he received a wound in the lower left side of the abdomen and hospitalized in Charleston while General Lincoln was in command. He was an Major in the Continental Army.

December 26, 1779 - British Gen. Clinton sets sail from New York with 8000 men and heads for Charleston, South Carolina, arriving there on Feb. 1. April 8, 1780 - The British attack begins against Charleston as warships sail past the cannons of Fort Moultrie and enter Charleston harbor. Washington sends reinforcements. May 6, 1780 - The British capture Fort Moultrie at Charleston, South Carolina. May 12, 1780 - The worst American defeat of the Revolutionary War occurs as the British capture Charleston and its 5400-man garrison (the entire southern American Army) along with four ships and a military arsenal. British losses are only 225. John's brother, James the 5th came through the lines of the seige-beset city to be with him as long as he could. Before the surrender he slipped out, taking his brother, Job, with him. (It is said that Col. Marion was with them.) They joined the forces of Col. (later Gen.) Marion and remained with him for the rest of the war. John's son, Gilead, was paroled; John was not, as he was an officer. Later he was put on a prison ship where he died in 1780. His wife, Ann, heard nothing of him after the letter he sent back by son, Gilead.

I agree with you . . . that the James Thigpen who was born 1743 had a son named James. However, I disagree with the "titles" of V, and VI. My cousin, Herman May, has some documentation which indicates that the father of James Thigpen who was born 1743, was named JOHN, and not James. Here is what we believe is correct:
