About James Ewing Work
From “Work Family History”, vol. I (1969) & vol. II (1994), compiled by Von Gail Hamilton.
(Information provided by his daughter, Janet C. Work):
James told of being sent to Crawford School - he and his little brother - and telling their mother after a few days that is was just too cold to go to school. Apparently, they were allowed to drop school until the spring term, but James always added that they spent the winter sliding down the hills.
Since it was impossible to get a secondary education in Redclyffe (PA), James got his as preparatory work at college. He taught several years of rural school before graduating from Westminster College in 1901. A week before the end of school, he went back to Newburgh, NY, married, and brought his bride to commencement, a most unusual thing for a student in those days.
Immediately after graduation, they took the train to Colorado, where he worked for his father on a farm west of Ft. Morgan. James was the owner, and on this fertile, level-lying, irrigated farm he lived for more than 50 years. James was a director of the Bijou Co. for years. For extra earnings in the early days, he and a team of horses often worked on the dirt work needing to be done for various irrigation reservoirs and canals.
James was an honorary vice president of the American Sunday School Union, giving counsel to their non-denominational area missionaries, working with the small Sunday School in schoolhouses, grange halls and similar places. . . . He was a member of the local school board and always assisted in the drives for Red Cross, CROP, war bonds, etc. At the time of h is death, he was a member of the county board of the Beet Growers Association. He worked with the county agricultural programs for many years, and at the County Junior Fair.
James died after being struck by a skidding car as he stood near the road, repairing the rural mailbox. The preceding week had been a very happy one, with family members present to eat dessert with him on his 80th birthday, and then to eat Thanksgiving dinner together the day before his death.
James and his wife, Mary, appeared in a series entitled "They Contributed to Our Heritage", published June 1974, in the "Fort Morgan Times", written by his daughter, Janet Campbell Work.
