About Jan Karski

Jan Karski (1914-2000) was a Polish World War II resistance-movement soldier, and later a professor at Georgetown University. In 1942–43 Karski reported to the Polish Government-in-Exile and to Poland's Western Allies about the situation in German-occupied Poland, especially about Germany's destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto and about Germany's extermination camps on Polish soil that were murdering Jews, ethnic Poles, and other nationalities. Jan Karski, actually Jan Romuald Kozielewski, nickname Witold (born June 24, 1914 in Łódź, died July 13, 2000 in Washington, DC) is a citizen of Poland and the United States, honorary citizen of Israel, lawyer and diplomat, historian, academic lecturer and professor at Georgetown University . Secretary of the Director of the Personnel Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Courier and emissary of the Polish Underground State as lieutenant, witness of the Holocaust. For his activities he was awarded the highest national awards - the Polish White Eagle Order and the American Medal of Freedom. Yad Vashem honored with the title of Righteous Among the Nations, honorary citizen of the State of Israel.

Jan Karski's brother was Marian Kozielewski (1897-1964), commander of the State Police of Warsaw, first commander of the navy police in Warsaw, later the organizer and first chief of the State Security Corps in the structures of the Polish Underground State.
