John S. Pellowski. 89, Former Alderman, River Contractor, Succumbs - Was Active in Getting 4th Ward Park - John S. Pellowski, 89, a resident of Winona 66 years, former fourth ward alderman and active as river work contractor in the years when the wing dams were built on the Upper Mississippi, died at his home, 216 High Forest street, at 6:15 a. m. today. He succumbed to infirmities of age, and had been seriously ill about six months. Mr. Pellowski was born October 16,1851, at Koscierzyna, Poland, and came to the United States at the Age of 10. He resided at Hartford, Conn., two years, then went to Chicago for two years before moving to Winona, which had been his home since. He was the youngest of a family of eight children, all of whom lived to be 80 to 90 years old. Mr. Pellowski served, three nonconsecutive terms on the council as fourth ward alderman. He was influential in the - movement to give his ward a city park; served on the building committee of the St. Stanislaus church 50 years ago and took an active part in church and civic associations. Operated Quarries. For many years he operated stone quarries and lime kilns in the Winona area, also near Dubuque, and as a contractor for the federal government hired a large number of men, including many tradesmen from the East, in construction of the wing dams. Among the quarries he operated one was near the site of the present Minne-O-Wah colony, another near the E. L. King, home, one at Mlnneiska, another near Sugar Loaf, and one on Pleasant Ridge. Wed in 1878 - He married Julia Mauszycki on January 14, 1878, at the St. Stanislaus church, the. Rev. Romauld Byzewskl solemnizing the marriage. Survivors are two sons, County Commissioner Teofll Pellowski at home and Aloysius Pellowski - at Milwaukee, and four daughters, Mrs. Anton (Franoes) Jick, Galesville, Wis.; Mrs. Frank (Anna) Banazek, Milwaukee; Mrs. William (Martha) Mill, Minnesota City, and Mrs. Harry (Rose) Smocke, Winona, and nine grandchildren and two. great-grandchildren. Mrs. Pellowski died June 29, 1927; Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9 a. m. at St. Stanislaus church, the Rev. J. F. Ciemlnskl officiating. There will be a preliminary service at the Watkowskl funeral home at 8:30. The rosary will be said at the funeral home Wednesday and Friday evenings at 8:15 o'clock, and Thursday evening at 7:30.
