The earliest mention of a Steenkamp in SA is on 14 Oct 1714 when Jan Steenkamp married Geesje(Gesina) Visser (born 1 Sep 1686) in Cape Town. They had 2 daughters and 2 sons. No information found on 2 sons, believed to have died early. This means Geesje(Gesina) was not the original Steenkamp Ancestor: She passed away 1719 or 1720, where upon Jan Harmenz Steenkamp re-married Jannetjie (Jannetje) van Eck on 19 May 1720 in Drakenstein (Paarl). They had 10 children.

Jan Harmensz owned the farm "Het Slot" in Paardberg district Drakenstein, date of ownership noted 4 April 1715. In most accounts only the name Jan Steenkamp was used, however in the Estate of Jannetjie van Eck he was referred to as Jan Harmensz Steenkamp.

Although country of origin was originaly thougth to be Nieukerk, (Belgium) it has been noted a spelling mistake for Nijkerk (Netherlands). It is noted in source and also in the geneology of the de Villiers families, that Jan Harmensz Steenkamp came from Nijkerk, Province Gelderland, Nerderland.

It is speculated that Jan Harmensz might be the descendant of one Peter Steinkampf, Minden, Germany, sibling of Frederik Steenkamp whom resided in Hoorn, however this has never been proven.

Jan Harmensz died c.1744. His widow, Jannetjie re-married one Johann Heinrich Teutmann. They were both murdered, toghether with her daughter Anna from 1st marriage, on the border of the Roggeveld by Bushmen in 1772.

There is much controversy regarding the true Steenkamp flag, however lately accepted that the blue and gold ship as referred to in the geneology of the Steenkamp families in the Netherlands is the accepted. Note the entry in the Steenkamp Family Tree of the Netherlands as follows:

"In blaauw een gouden zesberg waaruit drie groen gebladerde en gestengelde, roode roozen opkomen.

Helmteken: de roozen.

Dekkleeden: goud en blaauw.

Die vroegste vermelding van 'n Steenkamp in Suid—Afrika is op Oktober 14, 1714 toe Jan Steenkamp in die huwelik met Geesje (Gesina) Visser, gebore 1 September, 1686 in Kaapstad, bevestig is. Hulle het twee seuns en twee dogters verwek. Daar kon geen gegewens opgespoor word dat die twee seuns, by name Jan, gedoop 18.9.1718, en Gysbert, wat op dieselfde dag gedoop is, ooit in die huwelik getree het nie. Waarskynlik is hulle altwee jonk oorlede en dus is Geesje Visser nie die Stammoeder van die Steenkamps in Suid—Afrika nie. Die een dogter, naamlik Margaretha, is op 1.9.1715 gedoop en sy is met Floris Smit getroud, en die ander dogter, Johanna, is op 4.10.1716 gedoop en is op 26.4.1739 met Gerrit Nieuwoudt getroud. Geesje (Gesina) Visser is gedurende 1719 of 1720 oorlede en die Stamvader is toe vir die tweedekeer op 19.5.1720 met Jannetjie van Eck in die Gemeente Drakenstein (Paarl) getroud. The Four Gesinas:

Briefly: Jan Steenkamp (c 1680) marries Gesina "Gijsie" Visser (1686) & has a daughter, Gesina "Gijsie" Steenkamp (1718). His wife dies, & perhaps his daughter too. He remarries Johanna van Eck (c 1705) & has another daughter, Gesina "Geesje" Steenkamp (1723). For various reasons it seems more likely that it is this 1723 daughter who married Jan Nel & gave birth to Gesina Nel (1758), rather than her 1718 half sister.
