Jan (77), who had been farming on the same land for more than 50 years, was shot dead at his back door with a single shot to the forehead, on Sunday 30/01/2000 at Vaalbank, Coligny,
On a Sunday afternoon four years ago, Jan de Klerk brutally attacked on his farm. He was hacked with an axe and his throat was almost cut with a knife. He fought back and survived.
Mr. Hennie Lingenfelder says he called his father-in-law just before two o'clock on Sunday afternoon. De Klerk talked calmly with his son-in-law and his daughter. About half an hour later, a reservist, Mr. Jan Nel called De Klerk and said he was on his way to the farm. Nel visited this farmer often.
Nel must have arrived on the farm moments after the murder, because apparently the farmer's attackers saw him coming and fled. They didn't even take the firearm that was in the bedroom next to his bed.
Mr. Johan de Klerk (44) from Pretoria and Mrs. Magda Lingenfelder (41) from Kempton Park was 13 and 10 years old respectively when their mother died 32 years ago. Their father Jan never remarried and took care of them until they were grown up and out of the house.
Despite all their pleas, he would not leave the farm even after being attacked. He was barely sixteen years old when he started farming with his father about 15 km outside Coligny. He knew no other life. His four employees have also been with him on the farm for more than 40 years.
For those who were hungry, he distributed flour and other food.
In the evening he only had his radio for company. This and his church were enough for him.
