- He opposed the British takeover of the Dutch Colony in 1614. But, unlike the rest of the family, he swore allegiance to the British Crown that same year.
- He was given commission as Captain of the Richmond County Militia in 1692.
- He was a member of the Peace Commission to the Indians and an influential social leader in political affairs.
- He was an active supporter and member of the Dutch Reformed Church.
