Brief overview:

Jana (81), a pensioner of Dutch decent, who lived alone at Van Wijk Street, Franschhoek, was raped and beaten to death when three youths gained access to her home, on or around 23rd January 2008. Jana has last been seen on 22nd January. Jana's decomposing body was found in the garage on 29th January.

Concerned friend and neighbour, Gary Scott, contacted the security company and police. "I jumped over the wall," said Scott. "I noticed her open bedroom window." He peeped in and saw that her possessions were scattered all over the room, but couldn't gain access into the house.

The three perpetrators broke in through an open bedroom window at the back of the house. The house was ransacked, but only a laptop computer appeared to be missing.

The three males, aged between 16 and 18, were arrested at the Paarl Magistrate's Court where they were appearing for a separate case of housebreaking and theft, police spokesperson inspector Bernadine Steyn said.
