Biography ==Captain William Bean, Jane's father, was born in St Stephen's Parish, Northumberland County, Virginia. William moved to Augusta County Virginia, and then to Luneburg County, Virginia and then settled on the Dan River. He was a member of the County Court there. Halifax County was formed from Luneburg County in 1752, and then Pittsylvania County,Virginia was formed from Halifax County in 1766-1777. Without movingat all, William and his family lived in three counties, which can cause some confusion when tracing the births of his children.

In Virginia, William married his first wife (name unknown), and they had five children: Captain William Bean, born 1745; John Bean, born before 1749; Captain Robert Bean, born 1750, George Bean, born 1754, and Jesse Bean, born 1756.
Her father then married, in Greensboro, North Carolina, Lydia Russel [Jane's mother] daughter of William Russell of The Watauga Settlement, in North Carolina. Captain Bean and Lydia (Russsel) Bean had four children: First, her older brother Edmund was born 1763, then Jane, born1766, then Sarah, born early in the year of 1768, and finally RusselBean, born May 1769. The Watauga Settlement was located south of the Holston River, on the Watauga and Nolichucky Rivers in the colony of North Carolina.<ref> http://www.anamericanfamilyhistory.com/TennesseeFamilies&Places/Boo... </ref> In 1769, Jane's father built a log cabin on the bank of Boone's Creek, a tributary of the Watauga Rvier, near what is today Johnson City, Tennessee. This was the humble beginnings of the first permanent settlement in what is now the state of Tennessee. Jane's baby brother Russel was the first "white child" born there. While her brother's history has been heralded as "Tennessee's Native Son" not much is known about his sister, Jane. According to the information published by Clan MacBean, she was killed by Indians, near the settlement her family established "Bean Station, Tennessee" on November24, 1798.
