William Cowan & Jane Walker - Andrew Finis Cowan letter details descendant info Posted by: Margie Cowan (ID *****6900); Date: November 21, 2004

  • For descendants of William Cowan and Jane Walker, I also just recently received a copy of a 1906 letter written by Andrew Finis Cowan (grandson of William and Jane) whose father was Andrew Cowan (son of William Cowan and Jane Walker). He details his knowledge of his aunts and uncles, lists them by name and his last-known whereabouts of them.
    • (Andrew Finish Cowan was a grandson of William Cowan and Jane Walker. As such, he certainly knew who his aunts/uncles and grandparents were.)
    • The letter was given to Mr. James E. Freeman of Camas, WA some 50 years ago when he was visiting Miss Dora Cowan in AR. Jim is a 4th cousin who has been researching the Blount Co., TN Cowans since the 1950s (he's now 70+). He graciously sent me the letter (ON LOAN) and I have both scanned the 4 pages of the letter and taken pictures of each page.
    • Again, am willing to share ... (I've PDFd the file, with a typed transcript of the handwritten letter, plus added a spreadsheet of additional facts/sources to corroborate his information, so the file is large ... about 3MB. If you want a copy of this file, make sure your ISP can handle this size file.)
    • Anyone interested in my 110+ page "index" of William Cowan and Jane Walker's descendants let me know and I will send you that file as a PDF also. Would like your family history in return ... so that I can add additional descendants, as necessary, and/or correct any inadvertently inaccurate information. This "index" is WELL documented!

Jane Walker,

  • daughter of John and Ann Houston Walker
  • is said to have married Capt. William Cowan and
  • they settled on the tract of land in lower Castlewood that had been settled by Capt. David Gass in 1769,
    • from whom William Cowan purchased by assignment.
      • This tract it will be recalled lay two miles below Moore's Fort on South side of the Clinch River.
      • The land they lived upon is now owned by the Quillen family, descendants of James Osborne who purchased the land from Capt. William Cowan and
      • the old rundown log house still standing is assumed to be the one Capt. Gass built and lived in as well as Capt. William Cowan.
  • Capt. William Cowan was active in Indian days along the Clinch until he left in 1786 for either Kentucky or Tennessee. (I have no list of the children for William and Jane Cowan)
