  • Bio of John Hollingsworth and Jane Eltonhead Posted 25 Feb 2019 by Linda Williams
  • St. Luke's Protestant Episcopal Parish, with the Parish Church situated at Church Hill, in Queen Anne's County, Maryland, was erect- ed about 1728 out of the older "Chester" or St. Paul's, Queen Anne's County. (Records of that parish are listed as missing, except Vestry Minutes.) Very large numbers of Hollingsworths inhabited this area, starting with John Hollingsworth (1639-1698) who came to Maryland in 1650 with the ill-fated William Eltonhead, Esq. (See HR Vol. 1, pp. 127-134.) John left three sons, John, Thomas and William Hollings- worth, from whom sprang all of the persons or families set forth in the following entries in St. Luke's Parish Register. (Copy, Maryland Historical Society, Baltimore.) Branches of this family went to Ashe County, North Carolina, Clay County, Kentucky, Campbell County, Tennessee, and perhaps to Patrick and Henry Counties, Virginia
  • John Hollingsworth, the progenitor of our family in America, was born about 1639 in England, came to America in 1650 (another account has this date as 1648 or 1650), died in Kent County, Maryland in 1698. Left his will in Talbott County, Maryland April 23, 1698. 6 children.
  • On the 7th of October, 1658, we find that John, then aged 19, or thereabouts, was cow keeper "unto Mrs. Eltonhead". Other records show he was transported to Maryland by William Eltonhead, her husband, a professional transporter of people to the colonies, and a John Eltonhead from Lancaster, England. He married a Jane Eltonhead. William Eltonhead was a nephew of Edward Eltonhead, a barrister in London and in partnership with his nephew William in a shipping concern. This information came from various Maryland documents. John married Edward Eltonhead's daughter, Jane in Kent County, Maryland in 1670. The Eltonheads were from Eltonhead Manor, England, they were called Norreys (Norris) prior to a member changing his name.

Children of JOHN HOLLINGSWORTH and JANE ELTONHEAD are:
2. i. JAMES WILLIAM HOLLINGSWORTH, b. 1680, Kent County MD; d.September 1739, Queen Anne's County MD.
ii. JOHN HOLLINGSWORTH, b. 1660.
iii. THOMAS HOLLINGSWORTH, b. 1661, Talbot County MD; d. 1741, QueenAnne's County MD.
iv. SARAH HOLLINGSWORTH.
v. FEMALE HOLLINGSWORTH.
vi. FEMALE HOLLINGSWORTH.
The Last Will and Testament of John Hollingsworth was dated 23 April, 1698. It does not mention his wife, evidently she preceded him in death. It appoints three men whom I have always believed were his sons-in-law, as Executors. it states that his land is to be divided equally between his sons, "John, William and Thomas Hollingsworth", and the personal estate to be divided equally between his three sons and three daughters. The daughters were not named. Witnesses were Nicholas Cloud, John Shepherd and Dennis Carty. John left three sons, John, Thomas and William Hollingsworth, from whom sprang all of the persons or families set forth in the following entries in St. Luke's Parish Register. (Copy, Maryland Historical Society, Baltimore.) Branches of this family went to Ashe County, North Carolina, Clay County, Kentucky, Campbell County, Tennessee, and perhaps Patrick and Henry Counties, Virginia.
