About Thomas (of Capt Philip) Taylor

Not the same as Thomas Taylor, of Burton’s Branch.

This Thomas Taylor, is the son of Capt. Philip Taylor, Burgess.

Phillip came to Jamestown between 1624 and 1628. He was active assistant to William Claiborne on Kent Island in 1631. William was the Official Surveyor of Jamestown Colony and the Secretary of State of Virginia. In 1632 King Charles I gave a charter to Lord Baltimore of a Colony which was named Maryland. Phillip and the other colonists of Kent Island fought the Marylanders in the first recorded naval battle in North America in Battle of Pocomoke Sound.

From the Miles Files "Phillip Taylor settled on the Eastern Shore prior to April 1634. Patented 500 acres on the seaside of" Accawmack/Northampton in 1643. "Justice, Sheriff and Burgess of Northampton County, newly named in 1643" from Accomac Shire.

Notes associated with the settlement of the estate of Capt. Phillip Taylor, widow Jane, show Zarah and Thomas Taylor are orphans of the dec'd.

In 1643 Thomas Taylor, son and heir of Phillip, and his wife Frances, of Patuxant, MD, sold the 1,000 acres to William Anderson. Although the date of Phillip Taylor's death was not determined, it is evident that he must have died before the date of this transaction, yet it was not until early in 1646 that his widow Jane, or Joane, was granted local papers of administration on the estate of her late husband. The widow later married William Eltonhead of Maryland.
