Alexander McLean – “Alasdair Gobha” and his Descendants

This McLean came to Red Islands in 1822 and remained there for some years before he came to this parish. He was a native of Barra, and was a son of John, who was a son of John McLean (An Gobha Mor). Alex McLean married (1) Catherine, daughter of John Ban Gillis. Issue: — John, Michael, Jonathan, Neil, Malcolm, Christie, Mary, and Ann.

Malcolm was the only one of Alex McLean’s sons that came to this parish. He was commonly called Calum Gobha, and he settled in the - Highlands. He married Jane, daughter of Rory McNeil (Torlach). Issue: — Jonathan, Peter, John, Mary, Rory, Catherine, Michael, Joseph, Alex, and Bessie.

Rory McNeil “Torlach"
When this man came to this parish, he settled at Benacadie on the farm now owned by Hugh D. Farrell. He was married to Ann, daughter of Rory McNeil (John’s son), of Barra. Issue: — Peter, Paul, Jonathan, Larry, Jane, Sarah, Mary, and Catherine.

  • All the sons left the parish early in life. Some of them settled in the colliery towns of Pictou County.
  • Jane married Malcolm McLean (Gobha), of the Highlands.
  • Mary was the second wife of Murdock McKenzie (Donald Hector). She died in Pictou where two of her sons live.
  • One of the other daughters was married to a Mr. Carter, of St. Peters, and had a family.
