About Jane Lewis
"of Belvoir", Albemarle County, Virgina
Jane was born about 1705, died in 1757. Years are included in dates, however, not yet verified. Death date obtained from 2 separate SAR applications on Ancestry, although not official verification.
First wife of Robert Lewis. Mother of all of Robert's children:
Mother of John Lewis, Jane Lewis, Charles Lewis, Anne Lewis, Nicholas Lewis, Mary (Lewis) Thompson, William Lewis, Mildred Lewis, Robert Lewis of Granvil, Sarah Lewis and Elizabeth Lewis
Robert's 2nd wife was Elizabeth (Thornton) Meriwether, whom he married about 1761. Elizabeth's first husband was Thomas Meriwether, son of David Meriwether, Jane Meriwether's brother.
Thomas and Elizabeth's grandson was Meriwether Lewis, governor and explorer.

"Robert and Jane Meriwether Lewis are the paternal grandparents of Capt Meriwether Lewis the explorer. After Jane died, Robert married Elizabeth Thornton who was married to Thomas Meriwether who died around the same time. Elizabeth then became the paternal 'step' grandmother to Meriwether Lewis; but, before that Elizabeth and Thomas Meriwether had a daughter, Lucy Meriwether who married the son of Robert and Jane, who was William Lewis. It is William and Lucy who are the parents of the explorer Meriwether Lewis. Therefore, Elizabeth Thornton and Thomas Meriwether were also the maternal grandparents of Meriwether Lewis. In short, Elizabeth was the grandmother paternally(step) and maternally(blood). Further of note, Jane was an aunt to Lucy."
