About Jane Mullikin

Biography

Jane Prather was the oldest child of Jonathan Prater and his wife, Jane Mackall. Born between 1662 - 1664 at Calvert County, Province of Maryland, she died before 27 Jul 1710, around age 48, at Prince George's, Province of Maryland.

Comments:

  • Jane Prather’s mother, Jane, was previously called “Lyle Jane MacKay” by researchers. Beth Golden (2020) asserts her name before marriage was “Jane Mackall.” (See “Jane Mackall Prather Smith - A Brief Biography.” (document attached). Mike Marshall’s database calls her mother “Jane (unproven) Mackall,” and refers to the Golden study (see < “Early Colonial Settlers of Southern Maryland and Virginia’s Northern Neck Counties” >).
  • “Jane Mackall and Jonathan Prather married in Maryland on September 12, 1660.” But, “The exact date and place of Jane's marriage to Jonathan Prather has yet to be fully documented. It may be that they married in Virginia prior to coming into Maryland in 1658. Jonathan Prather was married when he went to Maryland in 1658 as he was listed for 100 acres when he assigned his rights to land to George Reade, Jr. on 6 Oct. 1658, for transportation (Liber Q, p. 202).15, 16 The 100 acres infers that John was married by the time he was transported to MD in 1658. However, it could be that Jonathan had a first wife who died and Jane became Jonathan's second wife. Jonathan and Jane's first known child was born about 1662-4, so the latter is more likely.
  • https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Prather-2: “As Maryland records are missing for this period, we must rely on secondary sources for dates at this time. Most genealogies state that she was born between 1662-1664 at "Prather Hall," in what was then Calvert County, now Prince George's County, just 10 miles south of the US Capitol near Ft. Washington, MD.”
  • https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Prather-2: “All Prather dates in this period are unproven due to the loss of most primary sources. John and Gary Prather, family genealogists, researched this family for 20+ years both in England and MD/VA. They aver that Jonathan Prather (I) married Lyle-Jane MacKay on September 12, 1660, in Maryland, after being transported there from Virginia in October 1658. He may have had an earlier wife who died before September 1660 as his 1658 transportation allowance was 100 acres, normally reserved for a married man... Also two of his alleged daughters: Mary Jane and Elizabeth have birth years of 1658 and 1660. It is doubtful either reached maturity as Jonathan later named two other daughters Jane P. (b. 1662) and Elizabeth (b. 1680).”[1]

Family

Jane P. Prather (b. 1662) married James Gunnell Mullikin, Jr. (b. 1662) in 1680, in Calvert Co., Maryland.[2] They had the following 9 children:[3]

  • 1. James Mullikin b: 1681 in Prince George County, Maryland
  • 2. Thomas Mullikin b. 1682 in PG Co., Maryland
  • 3. John Mullikin b: 1683 in MD - died before 1694
  • 4. Mary Mullikin b: 1685 in Prince George County, Maryland
  • 5. Jane Mullikin b: 1693 in Prince George's County, Maryland
  • 6. William Mullikin b: 1698 in Prince George County, Maryland
  • 7. Eleanor "Ellen" Mullikin - b. ca. 1689 and died as an infant
  • 8. John (2nd of name) Mullikin b. 29 March 1706 in PG County MD
  • 9. Eleanor (2nd of name) Mullikin b. ca. 1707 in PG County MD

James Mullikin, Jr. (or II), was from Scottish landed gentry, the Lairds of Blackmyre. His father or grandfather emigrated from Scotland to America earlier in the 17th Century (perhaps via Ulster, Ireland). James Jr. was born in Maryland. His and Jane's plantation in Prince George's county was called "The Level".[4]

Jane Prather Mullikin lived with her family on "The Level" plantation until her death before July 1710.[5] Jane's husband James Mullikin, Jr., died in May 1718 and that date is often incorrectly cited as Jane's death. His Will was proven on May 22, 1718.

    5. Jane's mother's Will (= "Jane Smith" at her death) was written on July 27, 1710 and names Jane Mullikin's daughter Mary instead of Jane as a beneficiary. This meant that Mary's mother was already deceased. Some researchers had used the "Will proven" date of Dec. 7, 1713, instead of the earlier July 1710 date.
