About Janet Young Calderwood
I cannot locate an 1851 census. It is highly unlikely the family were elsewhere.
In the 1861 census John and Agnes Calderwood were living at 107 Darlington Stewarton. He is a 60 year old carpet weaver. Agnes is 61. Janet 17 years is still at home and Robert is 14 years. Both children are bonnet makers.
I have just discovered Janet was married twice, firstly to Nathaniel Crawford in 1867 who died only months after the marriage at 24 years from phthisis which is a medical no longer in use for 1. A disease characterized by the wasting away or atrophy of the body or a part of the body. 2. Tuberculosis of the lungs.
In 1871 John and Agnes are still working, John weaving tweed and Agnes lining bonnets. Their daughter Janet 26 years is still at one and a forewoman in a bonnet factory.
She later married Hugh Dunlop in 1872 described as a tailor.
The 1881 census finds Janet and her husband Hugh Dunlop living in 2 rooms at 20 Rigg Street Stewarton with her parents John (80 years) and Agnes (82 years) Calderwood and three nieces Agnes, Jane and Janet 9, 4 and 2 years. It appears that Hugh and Janet had no children. Hugh was described as a tailor.
In the 1891 census her father John is still alive and living with them at 90 although her mother has now passed away. Their 12 year old niece Janet Calderwood is living with them. Hugh is 42 and a tailor clothier. Janet is house keeping.
In the 1901 census both are living with a 26 year old nephew Andrew Dunlop who is 26. Hugh is still described as a tailor.
Hugh dies on 26 June 1910.
Janet dies in 1919 of cancer of the rectum at the Royal Cancer Hospital Glasgow. One of her Calderwood nephews was the qualified informant, his first name is difficult to read.
