About Janet Murray

James Sandilands married Janet, daughter of William Murray of Polmaise, and died without issue at Hallyards, (29 September 1579). Janet Murray remained at Hallyards and married John Graham, who later adopted the title John Graham, Lord Hallyards. Sir Peter Young’s second wife was Dame Joanna Murray, widow of Lord Torphichen, who survived her marriage for only six months, dying in November 1596.

He feuded with Sir James Sandilands of Slamannan, who was the legal tutor or guardian of the heir. James was succeeded by his grand-nephew James Sandilands of Calder.[4] Janet Murray died on 29 November 1596, which some historical books have given as an alternative date of James' death.
  • According to the Scots Peerage 1911, Burke's Peerage 1999/2004, and current editions of Debrett's Peerage. However some publications have given his death at a later date. The Spottiswoode Miscellany, ed., James Maidment (1845), has "Sandilands died on 29 Nov 1596." The Genealogy of the Existing British Peerage; by Edmund Lodge, Esq; (1838), has "James, … d. without issue in 1596, and was succeeded by his great nephew." References to his 1579 death: "Sir James Sandilands, first Lord Torphichen, had married Janet, daughter of William Murray of Polmaise,.. dying without issue at Hallyards, 29th September 1579.." (quoted from Scots Peerage, vol. 8, edition 1911, page 387; Burke's Peerage (1999 edition, p. 2831) as well as confirming his date of death as 29 Sept 1579 also mentions the date of death of his wife Janet, being 29 November 1596, which some historical books have given as an alternative date of his own death.
