About Sir William Murray, of Tullibardine

William Murray of Tullibardine (1510–1562) was a Scottish landowner.
He was a son of William Murray and Margaret Stewart. His mother was a daughter of John Stewart, 1st Earl of Atholl, and Eleanor Sinclair. His father rebuilt Tullibardine Chapel and sent hart horns from Tullibardine to Edinburgh for the costumes of "wild men" at the tournament of the Wild Knight and the Black Lady.[1] He was killed at the battle of Flodden in 1513.
William Murray inherited the main family residence at Tullibardine Castle, in the village of Tullibardine, 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Auchterarder, Perth and Kinross.
He died in 1562.
Marriage and children
Murray married Katherine Campbell of Glenorchy, daughter of Sir Duncan Campbell of Glenorchy (d. 1513) and Margaret Moncreiffe. Their children included:
1. Annabell Murray, who married John Erskine, Earl of Mar (died 1572). She looked after the young James VI and 2. Prince Henry at Stirling Castle.[2]
3. William Murray of Tullibardine (died 1583), father of John Murray, 1st Earl of Tullibardine
4. Catherine Murray, who married Robert Murray of Abercairny
5. Margaret Murray, who married Robert Bruce of Clackmannan.
6. Jean Murray, who married James Henderson of Fordell
7. Lady Clackmannan and Lady Abercairny were dames of honour in the household of Prince Henry at Stirling.[3]

Sir WILLIAM MURRAY OF CASTLETON, which he acquired with the lands of Drumdewan 1490; married Lady Margaret Stewart, daughter of 1st Earl of Atholl of the 1457 created (see MORAY, E), and was killed in action in the lifetime of the father Battle of Flodden (Scots defeat by English) 9 Sept 1513, having had, with other issue:

  • Sir WILLIAM MURRAY OF TULLIBARDINE; served heir to his uncle, Sir John, in the lands of Polgour and Clow 1527, acquired Wester Locheane in Strathearn 1558; married c April 1538 Katherine, daughter of Sir Duncan Campell of Glenorchy (see BREADALBANE AND HOLLAND, E), and died 30 Jan 1562, leaving, with a daughter (Annabel, married 17th Earl of Mar, qv):

(96) Sir William Murray of Tullibardine, died 30th January 1562. He was served heir to his grandfather 23rd May 1525, and married Katherine, daughter of Sir Duncan Campbell of Glenorchy, and had issue:

  • 96(a) William (No. 97 below).
  • 96(b) Alexander Murray of Wester Aberlednoch and Drumphin, died February 1596. He married Isobel, daughter and heiress of Peter Reidheuch, and had:
  • 96(b)1 John Murray of Drumphin, living 1597.
  • 96(b)2 William Murray of Wester Aberlednoch and Drumphin. Served heir to his brother, John, 26th March 1603. He married before 12th March 1605 Elizabeth, daughter of Dr Gilbert Moncreifi
  • 96(b)3 Alexander Murray, living 1604.
  • 96(b)4 Humphrey Murray, living 1623.
  • 96(c) James Murray of Pardewis, died September 1592. His Will recorded 19th July 1594 (Edinburgh). He took part in the Raid of Ruthven, and was forfeited 22nd August 1584. He married, first, July 1572, Marion, daughter of Sir Simon Preston, and, second, before 17th April 1582, Agnes Lindsay. He had two sons:
  • 96(c)1 John Murray of Pardewis, died about 1606.
  • 96(c)2 Patrick Murray of Pardewis. Served heir to his brother, 30th October 1606. He married Margaret, daughter of Alexander Colvill, Commendator of Culross.
  • 96(d) Andrew Murray, living 1560.
  • 96(e) Laurence Murray, living 1560.

Sir William Murray, 10th of Tullibardine was the son of Sir William Murray of Castleton and Lady Margaret Stewart.{2} He married Katherine Campbell, daughter of Sir Duncan Campbell, 2nd of Glenorchy and Margaret Moncreiffe, circa April 1538.{2} He died on 30 January 1562.{2}

In 1527 he was served heir to his uncle, Sir John, in the lands of Polgour and Clow.{2} In 1558 he acquired Wester Locheane in Strathearn.{2} He lived at Tullibardine, Perthshire, ScotlandG.{2}
