Janet Semple was born on 18 May 1831 in Dalserf, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, a daughter of John Semple (1786-1860), Margaret (McNair) Semple (1798-1866).

On 03 March 1850, Janet Semple married William McAlpine in Glassford, Lanark, Scotland. Their children (a) include Margaret McAlpine (1851), Janet Ingram McAlpine (1852), Arthur McAlpine (1857), Jean McAlpine (1859), John McAlpine (1863), William McAlpine (1865), Alexander McAlpine (1870), Mary McAlpine (1872) and Robert McAlpine (1875).

On 3 August 1896, Janet (Semple) McAlpine, age 65, died in West Quarter, Glassford, Lanark, Scotland.
