Jean Thériot, originally from France,[1][5][2] was born about 1601.[3] Jean is a pioneer of Acadia. Around 1636 he married Perrine Rau. Between about 1637 and 1654 the couple had seven children: Claude, Jean, Bonaventure (dit Venture), Jeanne, Germain, Catherine, and Pierre.[4] The family arrived in Acadia prior to 1650.[4] Around the time of their son Pierre's birth (1654), Port-Royal was captured by Robert Sedgwick, who led 300 British soldiers and volunteers.[6] "The [French] soldiers at Port-Royal, who numbered about 130 … put up a brief defence against Sedgwick. Setting up an ambush between the landing site of the English troops and the fort, the Frenchmen fired on the attackers but proved no match for the experienced Roundheads. The French soon "took their heels to ye Fort." On August 16 the fort surrendered... Sedgwick granted honourable terms, allowing the defenders to march out of the fort with flags flying, drums beating, and muskets at the ready. The soldiers and employees working at the fort were offered transportation back to France and given enough pelts to cover their wages."[6] Although the commander of Port Royal left for France, most Acadians, including the Thériots remained in Acadia. They were permitted to retain their land and belongings and were guaranteed religious freedom. Dunn[6] describes life in Acadia during the 16 years of nominal British rule: "During the years of British rule, most of the Port-Royal population moved upriver away from the town. Using the agricultural practices initiated under D'Aulnay, the Acadians dyked and cultivated extensive salt marshes along the river and raised livestock. Through necessity, residents had reached an accommodation with New England traders who had become their sole source for the goods that they could not produce themselves... New England traders exchanged their goods for Acadian produce and furs... There were seventy to eighty families in the Port Royal area in 1665." In 1671, Acadia had been ceded to the French.[7] 70 year old Jean and 60 year old Perrine were living on a farm with 5 arpents[8] of cultivated land[9], 6 cattle, and 1 sheep. Most of their children were married, except for Pierre 16. It is not clear where the family homestead was located. A 1707 map (after Jean's death) shows son Claude living upriver from the fort near the Bellisle marshes. Son Bonaventure was living closer to the fort downriver.[10] Jean died before the 1686 Census[1] at Port-Royal.[4] See also Find a Grave Memorial: Jean Terriau The memorial actually has two death dates for him: 1686 and between the census of 1671 and census 1678. The memorial states he is buried at the old Garrison Cemetery, located on the grounds of Fort Anne National Historic site in Annapolis Royal Nova Scotia. Jean Thériot, originally from France,[1][2][3]was born about 1601.[4] Jean is a pioneer of Acadia. Around 1636 he married Perrine Rau. Between about 1637 and 1654 the couple had seven children: Claude, Jean, Bonaventure (dit Venture), Jeanne, Germain, Catherine, and Pierre.[5] The family arrived in Acadia prior to 1650.[5] Around the time of their son Pierre's birth (1654), Port-Royal was captured by Robert Sedgwick, who led 300 British soldiers and volunteers.[6] "The [French] soldiers at Port-Royal, who numbered about 130 … put up a brief defence against Sedgwick. There were seventy to eighty families in the Port Royal area in 1665." In 1671, Acadia had been ceded to the French.[7] 70 year old Jean and 60 year old Perrine were living on a farm with 5 arpents of cultivated land[8], 6 cattle, and 1 sheep. Most of their children were married, except for Pierre 16.[9] It is not clear where the family homestead was located. A 1707 map (after Jean's death) shows son Claude living upriver from the fort near the Bellisle marshes. Son Bonaventure was living closer to the fort downriver.[10] Jean died before the 1686 Census[1] at Port-Royal.[11][5] See also Find a Grave Memorial.[12] The memorial actually has two death dates for him: 1686 and between the census of 1671 and census 1678. The memorial states he is buried at the old Garrison Cemetery, located on the grounds of Fort Anne National Historic site in Annapolis Royal Nova Scotia. !Jean & Perrine arrived in Acadie in 1637 from La Chausse, France. Jean was a
laborer, probably at Martaize, France. By the 1686 census, Jean was deceased.
In 1671 census, they had seven children with five already married. According to Genevieve Massignon "Les Partlers Francois d'Acadia" V.1 p.37 & 49 the Terriots were related to the Dupuis' in France before their emigration to Acadia by Perrine Terriot, sister of Jehan and wife of Martin Dupuis and the same author says that the Terriot family name was among those of Aulmay Seigniory in Poitau, living in Martaize, dept. of Vienne, France. They lived at Port Royal, Acadia. They had seven children.

Jean arrived in Acadia in 1632 with Isaac de Razilly. He arrived with his wife, Perrine Breau and his sister Perrine (Theriault) Dupuy. This suggests that the Theriaults were among the pioneer families of the young colony. Jean arrived initially in La Heve and removed to Port Royal in 1636. By the 1686 census for Port Royal, Jean and his wife were no longer living.

Terriau ou Theriault ou Theriot, Jean, n 1601, prob d avant 1686,laboureur en 1671, peut-etre originaire de Martaize (Vienne), peut-etrearrive entre 1632 et 1636 Jean Theriot was born 1601 in Martaize, Loudun, Vienne, France, and died1685 in Port Royal, Acadia. He married Perrine Breau Abt 1631 in Loudun, France. Notes for Jean Theriot: He arrived Acadia about 1637. Lived in Port Royal. DEATH: before 1686 Port Royal census. COMMENT: also spelled Terriau or Teriot THE NAME(S) THERIAULT... At the time, it was common practice to modify ones family name. And sorecords indicate today's "Theriault" name came from"Terriot"-"Theriot"-"Theriau"-"Therriault" and finally to "Theriault". It would appear that JEHAN TERRIOT, the grand daddy of all "Theriault's"in North America, was recruited as a labourer inNew France, by Charles de Menou, SieurD'Aulnay and Charnisay and Gouvernor of Acadia from 1604-1650. While JEHAN TERRIOT'Sbirth certificate is not available, the first Acadia Census of 1671 indicatesthat he lived in Port Royal and was, at the time, 70 years old. It is therefore safe to assume, thatJEHAN was born "ABT 1601". The 1671 Port Royal Acadian Census, indicates that JEHAN and hisfamily owned six cattles and one sheep, at the time the census was taken. Historians havenot been able to locate records of JEHAN, Perrine and Claude (their oldest son)'s "boarding pass"registering their Sea voyage from France to Acadia, New France however it is estimated theyarrived in the late 1630's or early 1640's. Historical documents confirm that JEHAN was infact a recruit of Charles de Menou in 1635. We also know that Charles de Menou of D'Aulnay, conducted two significant "recruitment voyages", one in 1642 and another in 1644. Onboth occasions, he transported a number of families from his ho me parish (La Chaussee) inFrance, to Acadia, New France. During this period of time, JEHAN worked as a labourer, residing in the village of Martaize, located just a few kilometers from La Chaussee. Given thesetwo facts (working for Charles de Menou and residing in his close proximity), is it possiblethat JEHAN accepted a 36 month work contract and travelled from Port de la Rochelle (France) toPort Royal (Acadia), and that he and his family (wife Perrine and oldest son,Claude) were one of the twenty french families, on the 1644 voyage? While historians are unableto confirm JEHAN'S actual date of death, the Acadia Census of 1681 records "Perrine Braultis the WIDOW of JEHAN TERRIOT". By 1681, many of the "Therriot Family" had moved toBeaubassin, Grand-Pre, Riviere-aux Canards and Cobequid. Historical records indicate, that by the early 1730's, some of the "Terriot Families" had travelled up the St. JohnRiver and re-located in areas known today as the Province of New Brunswick. In early 1730, someof the Theriault families travelled up the St. John River and located in what is todayknown as the Province of New Brunswick.

GEDCOM Note

Jehan Therriot was born at Grande-Chausee, at Loudunois, France in1600. He came to Acadia in 1632 with Commander de Razilly. The 20thof March in 1632, the Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye had returned toFrance it's colonies at Quebec and Port-Royal, which had been taken bythe Scottish and English. The tenth of May following, the King ofFrance ordered Commander Charles de Razilly, Knight of the religiousand military order of Malte, to take back Port-Royal from theScottish, it having been established since 1628. The 20th of June, two sailing ships the Saint-Jean (250 tons) and theL'Esperance-en-Dieux, left from La Rochelle, after having loaded thenecessary provisions for the trip, and several men. The ships stayedat Auray in Bretagne, where a third ship joined them for the trip. After loading the ships and the rest of the recruits of " 300 Elitemen," comprising of Soldiers and their officers, singles and a dozenfamilies, of which was Jehan Therriot and Perrine Breau who had justbeen married, a sister of Jehan, Perrine Therriot and her husbandMartin Dupuy, who were also newlyweds, it set sail for the New World. It was quite frequent, for this time period, that the colonistsmarried beforetheir departure to New France. It is probable that abrother of Perrine Breau, Vincent, was also among the recruits withhis wife and one son, also named Vincent. Razilly recruited peoplewho lived nearareas surrounding his home and that of his cousinCharles de Menou, Sieur Aulnay, who went with them to Acadia. Theroad which the Therriot's, the Breau's and the Dupuy's all lead to theSeigneurie d'Aulnay. These surnames often come from the parishregisters of Saint-Clement de la Grande-Chausee. Leaving Auray on the 28 July 1632, the ships dropped anchor at themouth of La Heve River, at the south of Acadia, the 8 September aftera month and a half at sea. They immediately took on the task of building a Fort on a point thatwould guard the entrance of the river La Heve, as well as some ho mesfor the families, a house for keeping all the singles, a chapel and amonastery for the Capuchin's who came with he recruits. The followingyear, they cleared a plot of land near "Petite Riviere", about fifteenkilometers to the west of the Fort. Jehan Terriot and Martin Dupuy, his brother-in-law, were sent to settle in this area which wouldbecome the nucleus of the Le Heve Colony. In 1634, Razilly, in aletter to the Cardinal of Richelieu, affirmed that " the Fort ofSainte-Marie-de-Graces is in good condition for defending the crossand the lily (fleur de lis) and it is equipped with twenty-fivecanons."In December 1635, Commander Razilly died suddenly, leaving the job asCommander of the colony to his cousin and Lieutenant, Charles deMenou, Sieur d'Aulnay. After arriving on the Saint-Jean in the monthof May 1636, d'Aulnay transported the colony to Port-Royal. In 1636, probably at La Heve, before leaving for Port-Royal, a son, probably named Claude was born to Jehan Therriot and Perrine Brault. Jehan Therriot and his family were witnesses to the capture ofPort-Royal by the English in 1654. Their eldest son, Claude who wasold enough to carry a gun, was probably among the heroic defenders ofPort-Royal, which resisted the assaults from the English for twoweeks, despite their inferior numbers. In 1659, Jeanne, the oldest of the girls, married Pierre Thibodeau, near Port-Royal. For the 1670 Census we see the following about the Therriot family: " Laborer - Claude Terriau aged 34 and his wife Marie Gautrot aged24." " Laborer - Germain Terriau aged 25 and his wife Andree Brun aged 25." " Laborer - Jehan Terriau aged 70 and his wife Perrine Bau 60. Theirseven children - Those who are married Claude Terriau aged 34, Jehanaged 32, Bonaventure 30, Germain 25, Jeanne 27, Catherine 21. Thenon-married Pierre 16. Their horned animals six and one sheep.Workable land 5 acres." " Laborer - Pierre Thibeaudeau aged 40 and his wife Jeanne Terriau27." " Laborer - Bonaventure Terriau 27 and his wife Jeanne Boudrot." " Laborer - Pierre Guilbault aged 32 and his wife Catherine Terriauaged 20." The recorder mentions a Jehan Terriau, aged 32, son of Jehan Terriotand Perrine Brault and who is married, but the family of this Jehanis not mentioned elsewhere in this census nor in the ones that follow. Is he dead, or did he return to La Heve where the recorder did notgo, since it was considered as a village belonging the Indians and theMetis. For the census of 1686, Jehan Terriot and Perrine Brault are bothdead. Claude, Bonaventure, Jeanne and Catherine are still living atPort-Royal. Germain is deceased and his widow has been remarried forseven years. As for Pierre, the youngest of their children, he wentto establish a settlement at Grand-Pree, in the Bassin des Mines.

:Although the commander of Port Royal left for France, most Acadians, including the Thériots remained in Acadia. They were permitted to retain their land and belongings and were guaranteed religious freedom. Dunn≤ref name=Dunn/> describes life in Acadia during the 16 years of nominal British rule:
≤blockquote>"During the years of British rule, most of the Port-Royal population moved upriver away from the town. There were seventy to eighty families in thePort Royal area in 1665." ≤/blockquote>
