About Jeanne (Joan) Briggs

Joan Allen

  • Birth: 1602 - Weymouth, Dorset, England
  • Death: 1639 - Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts

Clement Briggs married (1) By 1 March 1630/1 Joan Allen (1 March 1630/1: "Mr. Tho: Stoughton, constable of Dorchester, is fined £5 for taking upon him to marry Clement Briggs & Joane Allen ...." She died by 1640. (On 6 March 1637/8 at a Quarter Court at Cambridge Clement Briggs gave a bond of £10 for the appearance of his wife at the next court; at the same court Arthur Warren was presented "for keeping company with Clement Briggs's wife, [which] was found to be true." At a Quarter Court on 5 June 1638 Clement Brigg's wife was "enjoined not to come into the company of Arthur Warren.")

They had two children: Thomas & Jonathan.

Origins

In addition to the eleven children named above, some researchers also believe that the Joan Allen who married Clement Briggs at Dorchester in 1630/1631, and the Joshua Allen who married Mary Crowell at Yarmouth in 1671, and the James Allen who resided at Martha’s Vineyard are also George's children. After spending considerable time researching these three individuals, I could not find one shred of evidence that indicated that they even knew George Allen, much less were related to him. As such, I do not believe that these are George’s children, and have therefore not included them as such in this genealogy).

Joan (Allen) Briggs is frequently but incorrectly identified as the daughter of George Allen. Per Great Migration: Immigrants to New England, 1634-1635 (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society; 1999) (I:643-5), George Allen had no daughter named Joan (or variants) by either one of his wives.

The parents and origins of Clement Briggs and Joan (Allen) Briggs remain unknown.
