  • 2774. JEDEDIAH ("JEDDIAH") SAYRE was born 10 August 1828 on his father's farm on Pleasant Creek, Barbour, West Virginia. He was the son of Solomon and Mary Ann (Ball) Sayre. Jeddiah grew up on the family farm, part of which is now the headwaters of Tygart Lake. Jeddiah was a stonemason, a woodsman and a farmer.

Jedediah Sayre married 1st, on Pleasant Creek 1 January 1851 ARAH JANE PROUDFOOT, who was born 26 September 1828 to James and Elizabeth (Read) Proudfoot.

During the time western lands were being "homesteaded" Jeddiah, with some of his relatives and neighbors, sold everything they did not need for the trip and headed west in covered wagons. They attempted to settle in New Virginia, Iowa. After a harsh winter and illness, they found a wagon-train headed east which agreed to let them travel with it in return for the older boys (Frank and Will) working for the train. This account was given in 1971 by a descendant, Clarence Sayre (Will's son) - then age 90.

Jeddiah bought one hundred acres of land at Holly Grove in 1871. He moved his family to the new location about 1874. Arah's illness continued and he employed Susan Cassandra Winemiller, who moved into the house and took over the care of Arah until her death on 16 November 1880.

Jeddiah married 2nd, on 5 November 1882 SUSAN CASSANDRA WINEMILLER who was born 25 February 1855 to John and Alma Winemiller.

Jeddiah died at his home at Holly Grove, Upshur, West Virginia 20 December 1902.

Susan married on 10 January 1907 to Daniel Wilfong and died 13 September 1907. She was buried in Waterloo Cemetery, Upshur, West Virginia. The death of Susan was recorded in the Sayre Bible. Jeddiah and Arah Jane Sayre were buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, near Holly Grove, Upshur, West Virginia. Children of Jeddiah and Arah (Proudfoot) Sayre:
